Chapter L

Ask your health insurer about payment

Will your health insurance pay for this care, or would you pay the whole bill yourself? Ask your insurer about the exact offer.

Ask about the exact offer

Tell your insurer the medicine’s complete name and why it has been proposed. Ask what information it needs to tell you whether your insurance will pay.

  • Will my health insurance pay for this medicine?

  • Is the assessment billed separately from the medicine?

  • Is any approval needed before care begins?

  • What amount would I owe, and can I have the answer in writing?

Keep the reply with the quote. If the care service and your insurer give different answers, ask which detail needs to be resolved.

Ask for a reply about the actual preparation rather than a general answer about hormone care.

Ask whether a medical spending account can pay

HSA is short for health savings account; FSA stands for flexible spending arrangement. Both let you set aside money for medical expenses.

The Internal Revenue Service handles US taxes. IRS is its short name.

As of September 26, 2026, IRS guidance distinguishes treatment of a diagnosed disease from spending merely for general health.

A general wish to improve wellness does not by itself make an expense eligible medical care.

Ask the person or company that runs your account what it needs to check this expense. Give it the prescription details and ask for a written answer.

Keep the required records

As of September 26, 2026, the company running your medical spending account may ask for a letter explaining why you need the care.

That note is called a letter of medical necessity. Ask the account company whether you need one before expecting money back.

The IRS guidance checked for this guide does not require a letter with that name, but the account company can ask for one.
